The film “I’m Still Here”, by director Walter Salles, will be Brazil’s representative in the competition for a place at the 2025 Oscars for Best International Film. The Brazilian Cinema Academy made the announcement this Monday (23).
The film was unanimously chosen by the Selection Committee, after competing for the spot with 11 other productions.
Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival, “I’m Still Here“, was applauded for about ten minutes after its appearance. The production stars Fernanda Torres, Fernanda Montenegro and Selton Mello. The film was also shown at the festivals in Toronto, Canada, and San Sebastián, Spain, and selected for the New York Festival.
The film is an adaptation of son Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s autobiographical book about his mother, Eunice Paiva’s struggle to seek the truth about the disappearance of her husband, federal deputy Rubens Paiva. He was taken from his home by plainclothes soldiers during the military regime and reported missing. Eunice Paiva is also forced to reinvent herself and chart a new future for herself and her five children.
Rubens Paiva was elected federal deputy in 1962, for São Paulo, for the Brazilian Labor Party. During the military coup, he gave a public speech calling on the population to defend democracy. He was reported missing for 40 years and his death was only confirmed with the end of the work of the National Truth Commission, in 2014. Rubens Paiva was arrested, tortured and killed by the military dictatorship in 1971.
The film “I’m Still Here” opens in Brazilian cinemas on November 7th.
