The parliamentary groups PSOE, PP, Sumar and Junts have reached an agreement to approve the law for the comprehensive care of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This new bill “arises from the reality of people affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis” and “paves the way for improving care for other neurological processes with a similar condition and prognosis,” states the text of the agreement, which elDiario.es has had access to.

The text of the law, finalized tonight after months of negotiations between the groups, includes 24-hour specialized ongoing care for people with ALS in advanced stages.

The agreed text also includes the creation of a structure for ALS research, a commitment to help electro-dependent people and vulnerable consumers, and specific training for professionals, as well as the necessary financial support.

Following this agreement, the text is expected to be presented to the committee next week, parliamentary sources told EFE.

The bill is “based on a consensus” of the proposals drawn up by these four parties, which were, in turn, based on a proposal drawn up by the ConELA collective of people affected by the disease. This proposal proposes a series of legislative changes aimed at guaranteeing the best quality of life, through streamlining the administrative procedures for the recognition of disability and dependency in people affected by severe neurological processes who meet a series of criteria.

The groups’ goal is to approve the law in the full Congress in October and take it to the Senate, where it would be definitively approved thanks to the large majority of support it is expected to have.

PP sources have already celebrated the “agreement reached last night with the Socialist Party to process the ELA Law after months of paralysis,” they say.
