French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday named Michel Barnier, a former top European Union Brexit negotiator, as his new prime minister, tasked with forming a government to try to end weeks of political deadlock after a snap election that resulted in a hung parliament.

Barnier’s main task will be to push through proposed reforms and the 2025 budget in a fragmented parliament. France is facing pressure from the European Commission and financial markets to reduce its deficit.

The snap parliamentary election called by Macron in June did not yield the expected results. His centrist coalition lost seats and no party managed to secure an absolute majority.

The left-wing New Popular Front alliance came in first place, but Macron ruled out forming a government with them after other parties opposed the idea.
