The year 2024 started fantastically for the AEX price. For a long time, the Dutch stock market index even outperformed the American S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100. In the meantime, the American big brothers have overtaken the Dutch stock market, but that does not alter the fact that it is a special achievement.
It’s been a while since a new all-time high. Can the AEX still surprise this year?
Heading for a new all-time high?
Is the AEX heading for a new all-time high? That is a question that many traders are currently struggling with. On July 15, there was a party on the Damrak for the last time this year and the AEX made an all-time high of almost 950 points.
With that, the AEX approaches the magical limit of 1,000 points. In the meantime, however, the price is already much lower at 912 points.
It is almost an understatement to say that the AEX has had a fairly volatile period. From April to July, the price shot up like a rocket, only to start a heavy decline.
That heavy decline reached a climax on August 5, when the financial markets worldwide were in the process of a gigantic crash. In the meantime, recovery seems to have started and the AEX price has recovered from around 840 points, to the current level of 912 points.
What will the rest of 2024 bring?
As for the rest of the year, the main question is whether the US economy can survive and how many percentage interest rate cuts the US central bank will make.
It would be a good thing for the AEX and the rest of the world if interest rates were to fall sharply, while the American economy did not enter a recession and at the same time inflation fell to the desired 2.0%.
That seems to be the scenario that is needed to give the bull market of the AEX a convincing continuation. Although that does not alter the fact that the year 2024 is already quite successful with the current yield.
Measured since the beginning of the year, the AEX has achieved a return of 15.38% and compared to one year ago, it has even achieved a return of 23.30%.
Almost any investor would sign immediately if he had a guarantee of that return for the rest of his life.
