Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), decided this Thursday (15) to increase the daily fine applied against the social network X, formerly Twitter, from R$50,000 to R$200,000 for failing to comply with a court decision.
The case involves an order from Moraes for the social network to block the profile of Senator Marcos do Val (PL-ES) and other people under investigation. According to the minister’s office, the order was not complied with.
On Tuesday (13), the senator was the target of precautionary measures determined by the minister within the scope of the investigations into the coup acts of January 8. In addition to the blocking of social networks, the parliamentarian had his bank accounts blocked up to the amount of R$50 million. The measure was announced by the parliamentarian himself in a post on the platform.
In the decision, Moraes warned that the new failure to comply with the determination could constitute a crime of disobedience by X’s legal representative in Brazil.
“It is further determined that the previously issued decision, the content of which was communicated via electronic letter, must be complied with within a maximum period of one hour, under penalty of a daily fine of R$200,000 for each of the profiles indicated,” decided the minister.
After the blocking order was issued, Marcos do Val said that the measures taken against him were part of political persecution.
“This action cannot be interpreted in any other way than as a clear and flagrant demonstration of political persecution. There is no legal or logical basis to support such a measure, showing that the objective is none other than to try to silence and harm a parliamentarian in the full exercise of his duties. It is an attack on rights and democracy, which cannot be ignored,” he said.
In a post on X, billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the social network, classified as censorship the court decisions that determine the blocking of accounts of supporters and people linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro.
