The die is cast. After a long period of uncertainty, Do Kwon, the infamous man behind the Terra fiasco, is extradited from Montenegro.

On August 1, the Montenegro court upheld the decision to extradite Do Kwon to his home country of South Korea, marking the end of a protracted legal battle that included multiple appeals and judicial twists.

Do Kwon goes to South Korea

The court upheld the June 28 decision of the Supreme Court in the capital Podgorica to extradite Do Kwon to South Korea, granting the East Asian country’s request while rejecting the same request by the United States. The decision comes after seven months of uncertainty.

The Supreme Court had previously granted Kwon expedited extradition to South Korea to face multiple criminal charges. The ruling found that the legal requirements for extradition were met for both South Korea and the United States. Ultimately, South Korea prevailed, partly because it had previously filed an extradition request.

Before Do Kwon leaves for South Korea, he must first serve his sentence in Montenegro, where he was convicted of forging documents after he was arrested last year when he tried to flee the country with a forged passport.

United States disagrees with decision

US prosecutors disagree with the Montenegro court’s decision and have announced they will appeal.

“The United States continues to seek Kwon’s extradition in accordance with relevant international and bilateral agreements and Montenegrin law,” the U.S. Department of Justice said.

The legal battle over Do Kwon is not over yet. Lawyers on behalf of Kwon have filed an appeal against the decision of the Podgorica High Court. Kwon’s defense seems to want to postpone prosecution for his actions as long as possible.

The fall of the Terra ecosystem continues to reverberate through the crypto industry. The disaster wiped out tens of billions of dollars in assets, severely damaging the industry’s reputation.
