The OAS did not obtain a majority in the resolution on Venezuela
The Organization of American States, which has been supporting all the right-wing coups in the region, in line with the decisions of the United States, has not been able to issue an interventionist statement regarding Venezuela. Several countries that are working on bilateral or trilateral dialogue, including Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, abstained or were absent to prevent a resolution in this regard while they seek avenues for dialogue between the opposition and the government that would avoid an escalation of the crisis or prevent a “peaceful” transition.
Prior to the OAS meeting, Secretary General Luis Almagro had asked Maduro to acknowledge his electoral defeat or call new elections.
The text demanded that the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, “immediately publish the results of the vote” at each polling station.
Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Suriname and Uruguay voted in favor.
Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Grenada, Honduras, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia abstained.
Dominica, Mexico, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela did not participate in the session.
The proposal received 17 votes in favour and 11 abstentions, with 5 absent, and no votes against. For its approval, an absolute majority of the members of the body was required.
