China’s foreign minister has warned the Philippines about the US deployment of intermediate-range missiles, as reported by British news agency Reuters on Saturday (27).
The Philippine vessels successfully completed their latest mission to the shoal without interference, the Chinese ministry said. Wang Yi, the Chinese minister, said relations between the countries were facing challenges because the Philippines had “repeatedly violated the consensus of both sides and its own commitments.”
Wang added that the introduction of US intermediate-range missile systems into the Philippines would generate tension and confrontation in the region, as well as trigger an arms race, which is not in line with the interests and desires of the Filipino people.
The United States deployed its Typhon missile system to the Philippines as part of joint military exercises in early 2024. While the system was not fired during the drills, a Philippine official later did not give details on how long it would remain in the country.
Wang mentioned that China recently reached a temporary agreement with the Philippines on the transportation and replenishment of humanitarian supplies to Renai Jiao, aiming to maintain stability in the maritime area, referring to the Second Thomas Shoal atoll.
According to Wang, China-Philippine relations are now at a decisive moment, and dialogue and consultation are the right path forward. He made the remarks on Friday (26) during a meeting with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo in Vientiane, Laos.
