Vice President Kamala Harris is moving steadily forward in her campaign for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
According to the Associated PressHarris already has the support of 856 delegatesrepresenting about 43% of the total required to obtain automatic party nomination, set at 1.976 delegates.
This tally of endorsements comes after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, prompting several delegates to declare their endorsement of Harris.
The research of the APwhich does not include superdelegates, was based on interviews and public statements from the delegates themselves and the state parties.
In addition to the delegates, Harris has also recently received support from key party figures, such as Democratic Speaker Emeritus, Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi publicly endorsed Harris on Monday afternoon, joining a growing list of politicians backing the vice president.
The consolidation of support for Harris is also evident among other potential candidates within the party.
Two strong competitors, the governors Gretchen Whitmer from Michigan and J.B. Pritzker of Illinoisalso declared their support for Harris, along with Gavin Newsom and California, Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvaniaand the deputy Dean Phillips of Minnesota.
States that have already declared support for Kamala include Florida com 210 delegates, North Caroline com 113e Maryland com 95among others. In total, delegates from more than 30 states have already endorsed his candidacy, demonstrating broad national support.
This strong endorsement puts Harris in a strong position to lead the Democratic ticket against Donald Trump in the next presidential election, reflecting a significant alignment within the party following Biden’s exit from the race.
