Perhaps the name Craig Wright rings a bell. For years, this man has claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin (BTC). However, it has always been pretty clear that he is not Satoshi. In March, this was confirmed again when Wright lost a case in the British High Court.
The judge even ordered Wright to publicly declare that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto. According to court documents shared by BitMex Research, Wright must post this declaration on his website, Twitter, and Slack channels.
Walk of shame
The court found that Wright “lied extensively and repeatedly” and falsified documents to support his claim as Nakamoto, thereby committing “very serious abuse” of the legal system, the court said.
Judge Mellor, hearing the case, said: “I do not consider a mere notice on his website to be sufficient, as his primary means of communication with interested parties appears to be via X/Twitter or his Slack channels.”
Wright must keep this statement “pinned” on his website and social media for six months, and on his Slack channels for three months. This amounts to quite a “walk of shame” for Wright.
In addition to publicly acknowledging that he is not Nakamoto, Wright must also state that he is not the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper, does not own the copyright, and did not create the first versions of the Bitcoin software. He will also be barred from filing future lawsuits based on these false claims.
Victory for the truth
Wright’s legal battle against the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) and a group of Bitcoin Core developers has been ongoing since 2021. COPA calls the ruling a “definitive victory for truth.” Attorneys for Wright have not responded to requests for comment.
Who Satoshi Nakamoto really is remains a mystery, and will probably remain so forever. In August 2008, Nakamoto registered the domain name bitcoin.org and published the Bitcoin whitepaper two months later. The rest is history.
