The Federal Police (PF) launched the 4th phase of Operation Last Mile, which investigates alleged deviations in the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) during the Bolsonaro government and the actions of the “hate cabinet”.

Federal agents are executing five preventive arrest warrants and seven search and seizure warrants, all issued by the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The operations are taking place in Brasília/DF, Curitiba/PR, Juiz de Fora/MG, Salvador/BA and São Paulo/SP.

Among those targeted for arrest is Mateus Sposito, a former advisor to the Ministry of Communications in the Bolsonaro government, suspected of being part of the hate cabinet. José Matheus Sales, a former advisor to the Planalto Palace, was the target of a search and seizure, according to information from columnist Aguirre Talento, from UOL.

The investigation also targets former members of Abin during the administration of Alexandre Ramagem, current federal deputy and pre-candidate for Mayor of Rio de Janeiro. There are suspicions that the agency was used to clandestinely produce and disseminate fake news.

At this stage, the PF is investigating whether Abin acted illegally to spread fake news about members of the Three Powers and journalists, in addition to illegally accessing computers, telephones and telecommunications infrastructure to monitor individuals and public agents.

“Those investigated may be held liable, to the extent of their responsibilities, for the crimes of criminal organization, attempted abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, clandestine interception of communications and invasion of another person’s computer device,” the PF said in a statement.
