O Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan announced the opening of a NATO liaison office in Amman on Thursday, 11, marking a significant development in the strategic partnership between Jordan and the Atlantic Alliance.
This is the first NATO office established in the Arab world, as announced on NATO’s own website.
The opening of the office comes amid NATO’s intensified efforts to strengthen relations with countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
“This step underlines NATO’s commitment to strengthen cooperation with its regional partners, as evidenced by the action plan adopted during the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington DC,” the alliance said in a statement.
The establishment of the office follows discussions that took place during the NATO summit in mid-July of the previous year, where the feasibility of such an initiative was explored with the Jordanian authorities.
Jordan, which has long-standing cooperation with NATO, has contributed troops to alliance missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya and has played a crucial role during recent regional conflicts.
The decision also aligns with Jordan’s close ties with Israel, a key NATO ally in the region, particularly highlighted during Iran’s Operation True Promise in April, when Jordan facilitated Israeli air operations against Iranian attacks.
This strategic move is complemented by ongoing military activities, such as a recent seminar in Aqaba where U.S. Marines and Jordanian forces exchanged experiences and training methods.
The presence of military bases from several Western nations, including the United States, reinforces Jordan’s role as a pillar of stability and military cooperation in the region.
