A preliminary report released by Iran’s Armed Forces indicated that there is no evidence of foul play or attack in the helicopter crash that resulted in the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.
The accident occurred during adverse weather conditions in the mountains near the border with Azerbaijan last Sunday, as reported by state media.
The report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces pointed out that “no signs of gunfire or similar were observed in the wreckage of the helicopter”, which crashed in a high-altitude region and caught fire.
Furthermore, it was mentioned that “nothing suspicious was observed in the control tower conversations with the flight crew.” More information will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Raisi, who was considered a possible successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was buried in the holy city of Mashhad on Thursday, four days after the tragic accident, which also killed Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six others .
The incident highlights Iran’s continued aviation security difficulties, exacerbated by US sanctions that restrict the acquisition of new aircraft and spare parts.
These sanctions have contributed to problems in maintaining the country’s air fleets, which still include many aircraft acquired before the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The country declared five days of national mourning for Raisi, who was a prominent executor of Khamenei’s policies and known for his strict stance on domestic and foreign policy. A new presidential election was scheduled for June 28th.
