A Turkish drone detected a heat source that could be from the wreckage of the helicopter carrying Iran’s president, Ibrahim Raisiand other Iranian officials.
The incident occurred around 1 pm (local time) this Sunday, the 19th, as reported by the Iranian state agency. The preliminary cause of the accident was attributed to bad weather.
The helicopter was carrying Iran’s foreign minister, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijanthe religious leader Hojjatoleslam Al Hashemin addition to other authorities.
The group was traveling through the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan when the accident occurred between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa.
Rescue teams face difficulties reaching the site due to strong winds and heavy rain. The health status of the occupants has not yet been released.
Iran’s supreme leader assured that “Iran’s state management will not be affected” by the incident. If President Raisi’s death is confirmed, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is expected to take over.
