The leaders of China, Xi Jinping, and France, Emmanuel Macron, released a joint statement this Tuesday, 7, expressing support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

In the statement, the two countries called for “ensuring the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine as neighboring states, and the joint creation of a viable, independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with its capital in Jerusalem,” as published by the Chinese government .

Furthermore, China and France have expressed support for a political resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. “China and France affirm their commitment to contributing to the political and diplomatic settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue,” the countries added in the statement.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) related to Iranian nuclear development, signed in 2015, was highlighted as an “important achievement of multilateral diplomacy,” according to the joint statement.

Both countries expressed commitment to supporting the international principle of nuclear non-proliferation and achieving peace in the Middle East, according to the released document.

Xi Jinping is visiting France, Serbia and Hungary from May 5 to 10, at the invitation of European leaders. The Chinese leader arrived in France last Sunday (5) and will remain until this Wednesday (8).
