Analysis: Imperialist aggression against Iran: the United States plunges the region into chaos
Just a few hours after the start of the imperialist attack against Iran, the entire region is already affected by the reactionary war of Israel and the United States. The Gulf States, aligned with the interests of the imperialists, are now widely involved since the beginning of the war.
For now, the attacks appear much more intense than during the Twelve Day War and affect the entire region, especially countries that host US military bases or that have actively supported US objectives.
As reported by the New York Times, the United States has repeatedly bombed the suburbs of Baghdad, Iraq, targeting Shiite militias affiliated with Iran. At the same time, Israel has begun to reinforce its military positions on its borders, deploying ground troops en masse, especially on the northern border. With the bombing of Iraq, victim of a devastating ground invasion in 2003, the United States and Israel threaten all actors that escape Washington’s geopolitical discipline, raising fears that the aggression will extend to Yemen or Lebanon.
In his speech, Trump clearly assumed the regional dimension of the operation: “We are going to make sure that terrorists in the region can no longer destabilize the region or the world or attack our forces. And we will make sure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons. It is a very simple message.”
At the same time, the Iranian response was directed against several US bases in the region, such as the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, where an explosion was reported, and the Al-Udeid base in Qatar. With the exception of Oman, all Gulf monarchies were targeted by Iranian return fire. The reactionary monarchy of the United Arab Emirates indicated that it “reserved the right to respond” to Iran’s retaliation. More broadly, the United States used its numerous bases in the Middle East to launch the attack, openly involving its allies and accomplices in the region.
At the moment, the attacks are mainly aerial, but the situation could quickly escalate into a naval conflict in the Persian Gulf. If US and Israeli attacks continue, Iran could be tempted to close the Strait of Hormuz and block commercial traffic, while targeting the USS Lincoln in the Gulf and its escort.
The magnitude of the ongoing offensive already threatens to become a regional conflict and demonstrates, beyond Iran, that the United States seeks to impose its will throughout the Middle East. A strategic region for the interests of US imperialism, from the flows of petrodollars from oil-producing countries that feed the US debt market (and the hegemony of the dollar) to energy reserves, including strategic trade routes. The Arab regimes in the region are allies and direct accomplices of the ongoing military offensive.
The regional escalation of the conflict is a reflection of the wars that the imperialists are preparing for the coming years. Behind the bellicose rhetoric of the imperialists, who justify an aggression of unprecedented violence by invoking the pretext of nuclear or ballistic programs, Washington defends its reactionary interests and wants to wash away the humiliation inflicted by the Iranian working class in 1979, before the Khomeinist counterrevolution, by reintegrating Iran into its sphere of influence with bombs. No to imperialist aggression against Iran!
