A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the northern coast of Japan this Monday (8), prompting the government to issue a tsunami warning for several regions of the country. According to state broadcaster NHK, the tremor occurred at around 11:15 pm local time (11:15 am in Brasília) and was felt in wide areas of northern and eastern Japan.
Authorities reported that there is a risk of waves of up to three meters reaching the coast of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures. The population in coastal areas was advised to immediately leave risk areas and move to higher regions. Emergency teams were mobilized to monitor possible structural damage, disruptions to train service and additional risk of aftershocks.
Images released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) show the location of the epicenter at sea, close to the northern Japanese coast. So far, there is no official confirmation about victims or significant destruction, but the government reinforced that the situation remains under continuous assessment.
The alert remains active while authorities analyze the behavior of the sea after the strong tremor.
