The Bases Law has been the subject of strong criticism from the PTS and La Izquierda Diario, who have argued that it should be declared null and void for several reasons. Here I detail five of them:

1. Corruption and alleged purchase of votes: The approval of the Bases Law was marked by allegations of corruption, including the alleged purchase of votes of senators such as Edgardo Kueider, found with more than 200,000 undeclared dollars in Paraguay. This corrupt practice is one of the main reasons why the law is considered void, as it was passed through illegitimate and undemocratic methods.

2. Repression and Criminalization of Protest: The law was approved in a context of brutal repression of demonstrations against them. There were dozens of detained, injured and hospitalized, which shows an attempt to silence social opposition through state violence. This repression is seen as a violation of basic democratic rights, invalidating the legislative process.

3. Delegation of Powers and Regression of Rights: The law implies a delegation of powers to President Javier Milei, which represents a significant setback in labor and democratic rights. These types of provisions are seen as a direct attack on working people and job stability, which reinforces the argument of their nullity.

4. Adjustment and delivery of Common Goods and Extractivism: The Base Law promotes adjustment, looting and the advancement of extractivism, delivering natural common goods to private interests. This delivery of resources is considered a betrayal of the national interests and of the working people, justifying its cancellation.

5. Void of Nullity due to Irregular Procedures: From the beginning, the treatment of the law was tainted with nullity due to irregular procedures, such as last-minute vote changes in exchange for public positions. This, added to the corruption that surrounds it, makes any application of the law illegitimate.

These reasons have led the PTS and other sectors of the left to demand that Congress declare the nullity of the Base Law immediately, arguing that a law approved under such circumstances cannot be allowed to be valid.

For these and other reasons, there is a call to take to the streets this December 20.
