The Spanish security company UC Global, SC. allegedly spied on conversations held by the former president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Dilma Rousseff (PT), as well as other Latin American leaders. The information, released this Tuesday (18), is from the newspaper El País.

The company would have carried out the interception of conversations for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency, in Portuguese), of the United States. The information came to light after an analysis of the computer of the company’s owner, David Morales.

Morales’ MacBook, confiscated by police after his arrest in 2019, was evaluated by experts appointed by Julian Assange’s defense. The owner of UC Global, SC. is suspected of having ordered the espionage of the founder of WikiLeaks and forwarded the information to US intelligence.

According to investigations by the National Court of Ecuador, on Morales’ computer was found a hard drive with the name CIA and a folder entitled “North America/USA/CIA/Romeo/Brazil/Argentina/March 2018/Venegas Chamorro/Travel”, with details of Correa’s meetings with former presidents of Latin America.

The recordings against Correa were made between March 18 and 24, 2018. In addition to the conversations with Lula and Dilma, meetings with the vice president of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner, and the former president of Uruguay, José Mujica, were also recorded.

Morales had been hired by Correa’s government to provide security for the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where Assange was staying. The owner of the security company ordered his employees to spy on the Australian hacker’s meetings with his lawyers, but he also started to monitor the president, especially after he left power, to transmit information to his successor and political opponent, Lenín Moreno.

The company would also have recorded Correa’s meetings at his residence in Brussels, Belgium, where the Ecuadorian moved after the end of his term in 2017. Rafael’s children would also have been spied on through spy viruses on their electronic devices.

The name “CIA” was found repeatedly on an external hard drive, along with reports about Correa’s appointments and meetings. Intimate footage of a diplomat was also found in a safe at the spy company’s headquarters — photographs that Morales allegedly used to try to blackmail Ecuadorian officials.
