Germany’s far-right politician speaks in uniform in evocation of Nazism

The speech of the conservative politician Claudia Pechstein caused discomfort in Germany due to associations, albeit indirectly, with Nazism. Dressed in a police uniform, she championed tougher measures against immigration and a “traditional” family model. With information from Folha de S.Paulo.

In addition to being a police officer and a former candidate for parliament for the center-right party, Pechstein was a speed skater and is one of the best-known German athletes of recent times.

“I often talk to my police colleagues, and we agree that we need to help those who need help. But when people come here, they ask for asylum, and a judge decides that they don’t have that right, so I don’t understand why they stay here,” said the former athlete during an event by the CDU, the country’s main conservative party.

The police officer linked illegal immigrants in Germany to criminality. “Solving this problem would bring more security to people’s daily lives. Using public transport and having to look around in fear is a problem that affects the routine of many, especially elderly women, ”she shot.

Pechstein’s speeches and especially his decision to participate in a political event in uniform generated great controversy in Germany. The country is witnessing a new wave of rise of the extreme right, and any reference to the Nazi past provokes strong reactions.

Left-wing politicians, activists and part of the German press considered the statements prejudiced and racist.

Pechstein also used the speech to defend the concept of a “traditional” family, formed by a man and a woman. “An intact family is still an example for most Germans. The country’s children face many problems, and so they want not only a good job, but a traditional family with a mother and father. CDU policy needs above all to take care of this traditional family,” he said.
