Tanks from the Israeli armed forces invaded a UN peacekeeping mission base in Lebanon on Sunday, 13.
According to reports from Folha, this event marks yet another episode of hostilities against Unifil (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).
The previous week, Israel bombed UN positions in southern Lebanon, resulting in injuries to five peacekeepers, sparking international protests.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement calling for the withdrawal of UN soldiers from conflict zones, accusing the mission of holding Hezbollah hostage.
“The time has come for you to withdraw Unifil from Hezbollah strongholds and combat zones,” said Netanyahu, addressing UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The statement follows Israel’s previous refusal to cooperate with Guterres, whom it declared persona non grata.
Unifil is stationed in Lebanon to monitor and ensure that conflicting parties respect the Blue Line, a border demarcated by the UN. The United Nations’ position is to maintain its presence in the region, with the argument that the UN flag must remain raised to ensure peace.
The situation escalated further when, on Saturday, 12, 40 Unifil contributing countries, including Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Turkey, Italy, France and Spain, issued a statement condemning the attacks on the peacekeeping mission. The note, however, did not directly name Israel as the aggressor.
These events highlight the complexity and volatility of the situation in Lebanon, where Israel’s military actions have provoked a wide range of international reactions and questions about the effectiveness and security of peacekeeping operations conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.
