video: March 2011 Archives

This is the terrifying moment a lorry driver came face to face with a car driving the wrong way on a dual carriageway.

The driver of the white Vauxhall Corsa had joined the A90 near Aberdeen via the exit slip road and then soon realised her error.

As the 20-year-old woman veered around an oncoming lorry, she was confronted with another and couldn't avoid a collision.

The second lorry then rolled over, dropping a shipment of cement bags and landing at the side of the road.

Amazingly, no one was injured in the crash. And after watching this video one too many times we're really not sure how that can be the case.

A red-faced man had to visit hospital after superglueing a tiny hat to his head for a party… and then being unable to remove it.

Luckily (for us, but not necessarily him) a BBC TV crew happened to be recording a show at the hospital when he arrived and caught the whole thing on camera.

Shawn Merter resorted to using the superglue to attach his little black sequinned top-hat after fabric glue which he'd tried using wasn't adhesive enough.

But the following morning he realised his error and went to his local accident and emergency department, still wearing the tiny hat.

Doctors cut the top off the hat and sent Merter home to soak the bizarre headwear until it fell off… all while trying to hide their sniggers.

It's not too often you can describe someone who get's buried in an avalanche as being lucky.

But we think Chris Bilbao is... as this video shows his pals were able to rescue him after he was recently engulfed by snow in British Columbia, Canada.

Bilbao - who was wearing a chest mounted video camera - was skiing down a slope in the Monashee mountains when the avalanche struck just behind him.

Within the time it took him to shout "Avalanche!" he was engulfed by the white stuff and his muffled screams for help can be heard on the dramatic video footage.

Luckily, after a very scary five minutes, his friends were able to locate him and dig him out with shovels. Those are the sort of friends you want.

Is this video conclusive proof of a Poltergeist haunting a family in Coventry… or simply someone off-camera moving a chair with a piece of string?

Lisa Manning insists it shows supernatural the goings-on in her home which are making the life of her and her children a misery.

The terrified mother says items are constantly moving around the house including pot and pans falling on the kitchen floor, and that lights are always turning themselves on and off.

She also says she's even had to flee the house via a window on occasion, when doors have tried to lock her in, and she thinks a ghost may have killed her dog.

Now, in a bid to convince her social housing landlords to give her a new house, she's filmed this footage which she claims is proof of a ghost. Do you think anything spooky is going on?

Imagine if the popular iPhone game Angry Birds was made into a movie, and imagine that movie was directed by Michael Bay… or alternatively just press play below.

That's because someone has done all the imagining for you and this faux-trailer shows what it could be like if Angry Birds become the latest computer game to receive the Hollywood treatment.

In the two-minute trailer a soldier is tasked with rescuing eggs which have been left behind enemy lines. He is then introduced to the catapult and disturbing real-life Angry Birds.

The video was created by Rooster Teeth and is very-much a spoof… for now. Although given what has happened to other games-turned films this could well happen.

We know that shark attacks are incredibly rare, and we also know that Basking sharks are harmless -- but this would still have made us nervous.

A kayaker in Florida recently came face to face 25-foot long Basking shark as he was paddling along in the sea in his 14-foot kayak.

While a number of onlookers shouted words of warning to Josh Reeves, it appears he knew he wasn't in any danger from second largest species of shark in the world. He jumped into the water and started swimming with the huge plankton eater.

Animal authorities say Basking sharks do not normally swim south to the warmer Florida waters… just like they're not normally known to hurt humans.

Weatherman Jim Cantore isn't the only person to go nuts for freak weather, a US teen has become an online hit after flipping out over a tornado.

15-year-old Tyler Tubbs had been filming a hail storm in Pennsylvania when he spotted a funnel cloud which was approaching. But it's what he did next which made the teenager and his footage go viral

He started screaming hysterically about what he was seeing. "We got a twister, do you see that twister," he shouted. Speaking to he mom on the phone he then added, "It's right above us, Mom. It is HU-mongous. It's hailing golf balls."

The video then ends with the lad screaming "It landed! Oh my God -- tornado, tornado!" -- Luckily he wasn't hurt, but there was much structural damage in the area… not all of it was caused by his high-pitched screaming.

A laptop-thief has found out the hard way why you should never mess with a geek after his techno-savvy victim decided to humiliate him online.

Internet entrepreneur Mark Bao was understandably not happy when his MacBook Air was stolen earlier this year, and the 18-year-old assumed he would never see it again.

However a couple of months later he realised a remote backup program he'd installed on the laptop was still running and backing up files… presumably belonging to the crook.

After looking through the files Bao was able to discover the identity of the person in possession of the computer and reported them to the police.

But he didn't stop there. He also looked at photos and videos of the alleged crook, including a cringe-worthy one of him dancing in front of the webcam and uploaded it to YouTube

275x250.jpg Which university would you rather go to, one which promised great job prospects… or one that taught you to survive a zombie apocalypse? We think it's an easy choice.

A University of Lincoln student has made a selection of impressive adverts adverts for his esteemed academic institution featuring dinosaurs, fire and zombies.

Media Production student Tom Ridgewell, 20, says his 'banned' adverts - shot in his own time around his course - are a step up from the usual bland and boring university TV adverts.

And while we doubt we'll see them on TV anytime soon, they've certainly proved a hit online… and probably even prompted some prospective students to consider going to the University of Lincoln.

A cartoon attempting to explain the Japanese nuclear crisis with a story about a flatulence problem and toxic poo, has become an online hit.

Aimed at educating children, the four and a half minute video tells the story of 'Nuclear Boy' who has had a bad stomach ache since the big earthquake.

It says he has notoriously stinky poo and that people are worried he will do one soon if he doesn't get enough medicine (sea water an Boron). Aready watched more than one million times, the cartoon goes on to say doctors are helping, but that Nuclear Boy has already done some stinky farts making some areas smell bad.

There's also talk of the time he had diarrhoea in Chernobyl. We just wish this had been played on BBC news to help us understand the situation a little earlier.

A sports reporter almost got run over on live TV when a car accidentally reversed into him as he was busy talking to the camera.

ABC 10 reporter Ben Higgins was talking about San Diego State’s recent win in the NCAA basketball tournament when the accident happened.

As the studio hosts cut to Higgins, he started his broadcast… but in the far left of the screen a over-sized SUV could be seen backing up towards him.

And it soon got closer. Within the twelve seconds it took Higgins to get his introduction out, the car was right next to him and still moving.

It was only when a member of the production crew bang on the back of the car it stopped… impressively Higgins did not, after a brief "Whoa" he calmly finished his report.

275x250.jpg A group of Dutch artists have fulfilled the dreams of DIY-haters everywhere…  by creating a room which can be redecorated at the flick of a switch, almost.

Going by the name of Mr Beam, the artists created a plain white room and then set up two projectors which were used to 'decorate' the room with light.

They took two months programing the setup to create the nine different rooms in various styles with things ranging from psychedelic wallpaper to a leather sofa.

But before you get your hopes up that this is the future of decorating, it's worth remembering that you really would become part of the sofa if you sat down.

When robbers stormed into US store with guns, they probably expected an easy time - little did they know the owner had his own gun.

Not only armed, but he'd also served for seven years in the Iraqi army and wasn't going to give up without a fight.

CCTV footage shows the robbers bursting into the Nashville store and appearing to point a gun at the store owner and knock him to the floor.

But it was when they went after one of his employees that Kamil Alakabi retaliated by producing a weapon himself and conducting an impromptu shootout.

The criminal duo then fled the scene and it's quite frankly remarkable that no-one was injured.

When he returned home, this pet owner found an empty bag of cat treats on the floor and decided to quiz his pets about who was responsible.

And by the look of this video it didn't take much 'interrogating' of his two dogs to find the culprit. The man started off by holding the empty 'Party Mix' packet in front of Masey and asking "Did you do this?" to no response.

He then turned his attention to his other dog, a Labrador named Denver who refused to make eye contact as the questions were asked and hung his head in shame.

The ridiculously cute response seems to be the proof that Denver had stolen the food… and should never take up poker.

When you think about adverts selling houses, it's probably dubious estate agent clichés like "delightfully bijou" and misleading photos, which spring to mind.

Well that's all about to change the moment you click play on this video and witness the way an Australian firm markets houses, complete with a lingerie model and armed commandos.

Estate agents NEO Property say they prefer to sell houses by creating viral adverts which feature gratuitously sexy close-ups of breasts and action shots… oh yeah, and the house.

This particular one shows a woman being held hostage wearing just her underwear and phoning for help and then describing the house as armed commandos are dispatched to save her. Foxtons it is not.

There was a bit of a balls up during a Comic Relief competition... when a toddler accidentally released hundreds of balls into a shopping centre.

Bosses at St John’s Shopping Centre in Perth had filled a car with red balls and hoped to raise money for Comic Relief by charging people to guess how many there were.

But it turns out they'd forgotten to lock the doors - as this inquisitive three-year-old discovered when he pulled the handle and released the play pools balls.

Hundreds of the plastic balls fell out of the Alfa Romeo MiTo prompting passersby to cheer as security guards were forced to scurry around picking them up.

However, we think the wiser shoppers were the ones who took advantage of that time to enter the contest. Well there were a lot fewer balls in the car to count.

A video of a baby repeatedly switching between unbridled terror and joy as his mother blew her nose has become an online hit.

And as soon as you click play, we think you'll see why.

In the 59 second clip, five-and-a-half-month old Emerson clearly doesn't know what to make of the noise his mom makes as she blows her noes.

When she's in the middle of it, he looks like he is witnessing the most horrific thing in the world. When she finishes, he can't stop giggling.

The video has already been watched more than 400,000 times since it was uploaded to YouTube earlier this week… but we probably account for a fair few of those.

When we first saw this video - seemingly showing AC Milan doing the limbo, fencing and dancing minutes before a match - we thought someone had spiked the water at the San Siro.

But it turns out that not all was quite as it seemed ahead of the Serie A match between AC Milan and AS Bari.

That's because the 'players' doing the bizarre and odd stunts are actually footballing lookalikes - hired to help advertise Italian sports newspaper Gazzete dello Sport.

We should have known something was up when we saw what we thought was Gennaro Gattuso ballroom dancing with the referee rather than head-butting him. But it's a funny old game.

We don't know too much about this video -- but we do know this man is very lucky to be alive.

That's because he narrowly avoided getting crushed by a car as it careered into a wall in Los Angeles at about 50mph.

The fortunate pedestrian had just walked around a FedEx truck when a car swerved off the busy road an into his path.

As this CCTV footage show the car missed him by a matter of inches as it smashed into the wall.

Amazingly the man and the passengers in the car all escaped uninjured… and don't worry, that's oil or coolant pouring out, not blood.

A driver in Turkey has been hailed as a hero after leaping into action when a fuel tanker he was unloading caught fire at a petrol station.

This CCTV footage shows the terrifying moment flames shoot up out of the top of the tanker and everyone runs away. Everyone except Koçak, that is.

Realising a massive explosion could take out the entire station, Koçak jumped back into the burning vehicle and drove it 1km to safety.

As he drives off, leaking fuel can be seen catching light and it took 60 fire fighters to extinguish the subsequent flames which caused much damage.

Several witnesses have since congratulated Koçak and say his heroic actions saved many peoples lives. We are not sure the word hero quite does him justice.

A woman has given Stephen Fry an amazing ukulele serenade asking him to let her act as a surrogate and have a baby for him, so that his DNA can continue.

Molly Lewis made the unusual request to the actor as he was being awarded the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University.

Getting up during a question session she sang to him about the various reasons he should have a child and why she would be an ideal surrogate mother.

To be fair we can't do Molly justice in words, so it's probably best if you just sit back, click play and enjoy the song almost as much as you will enjoy the way Fry responds.

275x250.jpgIf it all goes wrong for Premiership referee Peter Walton, he could always pursue a career as a mime artist.

That's because forgetting his cards didn't stop him booking players in the clash between Everton and Birmingham last night -- he simply waved an imaginary one.

Walton only realised his blunder after midfielder Jordon Mutch committed a foul and he reached into his pocket to pull out the yellow card.

After a couple of seconds of fumbling he obviously decided the best thing to do would be carry on and hope no-one would notice.

So he held up his arm as if brandishing a card booked the player… well if they can be injured by imaginary fouls, why can't they be punished by imaginary cards.

275x250.jpg Beards can be divisive, people either love them or hate them. And while we're big fans of facial hair, it appears viewers of BBC Breakfast are not.

Bosses of the show say they received hundreds of complaints after presenter Richard Westcott appeared on Wednesday morning with a newly grown beard - that's more comments than any other topic.

Westcott, who was returning from holiday, was presenting an item on council toilets from a convenience in Loughborough and everything seemed to go ok.

But hundreds of people are said to have emailed, texted and even phoned the show to complain that he looked "unkempt" and "dirty"… some even questioned whether he'd slept in the WC.

Surfer Zoltan Torkos has completed what's believed to be the world's first recorded kickflip on a surfboard. And we have to say it's pretty impressive.

Torkos had been hoping the trick would bag him a $10,000 prize from Volcom, who in 2007 said they would first surfer to film themselves successfully landing a kickfilp on a wave.

But unfortunately for the Santa Cruz surfer, competition bosses say that as impressive as his trick was, it doesn't qualify because the board didn't entirely leave the water.

While he didn't scoop the prize this time around we're sure Torkos will keep trying until he manages to get some proper sea air.

A video of a cat modelling new hairstyles by pushing his face through a cardboard box has become an online hit… well how could it not.

In the clip 'Various hairstyles and Maru' Maru, a Japanese cat, is seen walking up to a cardboard box and poking his face through a hole.

But what make this video particularly internet worthy is that Maru's owner has drawn a series of haircuts onto the side of the box. Wait, it's better than it sounds.

The video has already been watched more than 300,000 times since being uploaded to YouTube last week. May we put a request in for a kitty mow-hawk.

What's better than seeing a great basketball shot where the ball swoops straight through the hoop? Seeing one where it doesn't.

And basketball misses got get much better or more bizarre than this odd missed foul shot during a game between UConn and West Virginia.

Alex Oriakhi had stepped up to take a free throw for UConn at 22-22 when his shot hit the back of the rim, bounced off the front and then landed on the back.

That's right, the seemingly physics defying ball was left balancing at the back of the hoop as the players looked on in disbelief. West Virginia went on to win the game 65-56.

A woman who thought it was taking staff at an off license too long to server her has smashed bottles of booze worth £1,000.

CCTV footage shows the woman waiting a the counter of Rite-Buy Wines & Liquors in New York, before arguing with staff and telling them they were being too slow.

Angered by the delay in service she then stormed off down an aisle with her arm outstretched to knock bottle after bottle off the shelves

Bosses say she destroyed around £1,000 worth of alcohol by knocking it onto the floor, including several bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label scotch.

But no matter what the irate customer did, it's nothing compared to this clumsy wine store worker.

275x250.jpg An MP has been criticised for giving Liam Fox an air guitar accompaniment as the Defence Secretary delivered a Commons statement on troop cuts.

Graham Evans appeared to pluck away on a rolled-up copy of the Parliamentary order as Fox spoke about job losses announced in the Strategic Defence Review.

Rival MPs claim his behaviour was disrespectful to the armed forces and their families who are being impacted by cuts. In his defence Evans says he was "just tapping".

Check out the footage of the musically-minded Weaver Vale member below, and if you spot any other plucking Tory MPs be sure to let us know.

275x250.jpgA referee has set what is thought to be a new footballing record… by issuing a massive 36 red cards during a single match.

In case you are wondering how that is even possible, Damian Rubino showed red to all 22 players and substitutes and technical staff.

It all happened during a fifth division match in Argentina between Claypole and Victoriano Arenas when a brawl broke out between players.

The fighting got so bad the ref is even said to have begged police to lock raging players in their respective dressing rooms.

For any pub quiz buffs out there the previous record for red cards was a 1993 game in Paraguay which saw 20 players sent off.

A video of a Turkish grandpa dancing his heart out David Brent style has become an online hit after being uploaded to YouTube.

In the clip - believed to have been shot in Germany - the elderly man can be seen strutting his stuff in front of a TV.

But it appears this isn't the first time, because the grandkids who are sitting in the room look thoroughly unimpressed by his dance moves.

The rest of the internet, that's a different matter, since being uploaded just over a week ago the clip has already been seen more than 3.5 MILLION times.

Now we're just waiting to see the unnamed dancing granddad appear in a Lady Gaga music video.

Footballers around the world often celebrate goals with gymnastic jumps and flips -- but only in Brazil do team medics get in on the action too.

During a recent Copa do Brasil match between Comercial PI and Palmeiras, one of the players went down and required medical attention.

Nothing too unconventional there right? Wrong! After running out onto the pitch with his bag the Comercial PI medic did a cartwheel before looking at the injured player.

This (quite understandably) prompted thousands of the fans in the crowd to cheer… which in turn prompted the medic to do backflips, wheels and rolls every-time he came out.

While the match ended with a 2-1 win to Comercial PI, we know who our man of the match was.

It's safe to say a 3am news broadcast on a local Australian radio station wouldn't normally get the biggest of audiences.

But when newsreader Kate Wilson suffered a hiccuping fit during a recent report, it made it a viral hit all around the world.

Wilson had only just started the early morning report on 3AW when she first hiccupped while giving the time as "three o'clo-HIC".

Over the next three minutes she proceeded to hiccup another 20 times as she spoke about Gaddafi, the New Zealand earthquake and the sports headlines.

While a lesser newsreader would have given up or burst out laughing, Wilson tried to carry on… and listening to this we are glad she did.

Some football fans know how to make the best of a bad situation - whether that's pretending to score while getting hammered, or swimming in the stands.

No you didn't mis-read that last bit. The rain was so bad at a recent football game in Brazil, some fans were quite literally left swimming in the stands.

The torrential downpour hit the 80,000-seat Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo just before a game between Palmeiras and Sao Paulo.

And while it would have been enough to cancel any Premiership game, they are more hardy in Brazil and fans simply packed their swimming trunks.

They then proceeded to splash, swim and float their way though the 1 - 1 draw.

275x250.jpg A couple of days ago, we saw some helmet-cam footage of what happens when it all goes wrong at the top of a mountain -- today Filip Polc shows us a more conventional descent.

The Slovakian BMX bike pro recently filmed some of the most impressive downhill footage we have ever seen with a GoPro HD camera.

He was speeding down a specifically designed course down a steep hill in Valparaiso, Chile and can be seen racing down steps and flying over jumps as fans cheer him on.

Seriously, we have no idea how he completed the route - which won him place in the Valparaiso Cerro Abajo - it made us dizzy just watching it.

A video of a baby laughing hysterically as his father rips up a job rejection letter in front of him, has become an hit online.

The clip of ten-month-old Micah has already been viewed more than 2 million times since it was tweeted about by actress Alyssa Milano.

In the two minute long video, Micah's father can be seen ripping up a rejection letter for a professorship as his child squeals with delight.

With each tear of the paper, Micah laughs hysterically, until there is just a pile of shredded paper in front of him… not that he seems to care.

A US man has formed an unusual friendship with goose at his local park, after it started following him around whenever he was there.

Dominic Ehrler says Maria the goose now waits for him at the side of the road each morning and then dutifully follows him around Echo Park in Los Angeles.

Maria is also said to get over protective if Dominic gets too close to anyone and has even been know to chase off dogs which dare to come near him.

The besotted Toulouse goose will even fly along at the side of Dominic as he rides his scooter. Which is something you just have to see, click play, you know you want to.

Being in the front row and with a great view of the action, these people were probably pretty pleased with their rodeo seats… until this happened.

Butch Trimnal and his wife had been enjoying a North Carolina rodeo when one of the bulls began running towards them.

The beast continued to get closer and closer until it leaped up and over hoardings, landing in the stands right next to them… making the outing a little more exciting than the pair may have wanted.

While the couple were briefly thrown around by the irate bull, they were not injured even though they did go to the hospital to be checked over.

The bull was also uninjured and was used again later in the show… no bull.
