record breakers: February 2011 Archives

275x250.jpg A hotel housekeeper has won a place in the record books after becoming the fastest person in the world to make a king-sized bed.

Putting most people to shame, it took Louise Waller took just 95 seconds to transform the bed from unmade to a professionally smart finish, during a recent event in London.

In that time she had to deal with two pillows with pillow cases, a mattress cover, a king size bed sheet, a king size duvet and duvet cover and a bed runner.

While 30-year-old Waller is understandably happy about the record, she also realises it also means she will have a hard time convincing her partner to to it at home.

275x250.jpgMeasuring a mouth-burning 1.17 million on the Scoville Scale, this is the the hottest chilli in the world… and it was grown by accident in Lincolnshire.

Dubbed the 'Infinity Chilli' the fiery food has been tested by boffins who say it's considerably hotter than previous title holder, the Bhut Jolokia, from India.

It was grown by green-fingered Nick Woods who runs 'Fire Foods' from his home and says one day he notices the crossbreed chilli in his greenhouse.

Intrigued, he decided to sample it, but he soon regretted the move when a powerful burning sensation hit the back of his throat and was so strong he couldn't talk.

Speaking of the chilli he said: "I felt physically sick. I really wouldn't recommend anybody eat it raw like that"… obviously we didn't ask him for a quote straight after eating one.

275x250.jpg Rally champion Juha Kankkunen has set a new world speed record on ice after driving at 205.48 mph on an sheet ice off the coast of Finland.

Kankkunen was behind the wheel of a 6-litre, 12-cylinder, Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible when he made the drive - which beat his own record of 199.83mph from 2007.

Despite temperatures of -30 degrees and snow blizzards along the perilous 70cm-thick layer of sea ice he was driving on, Kankkunen was happy to put his foot down and speed along the 16.5km track.

His record - measured over two runs - was certified by officials from the Finland Traffic Police… though hopefully they won't be issuing him with a ticket.
