lucky to be alive: August 2011 Archives

275x250.jpg An 86-year-old American man has been treated in hospital after accidentally impaling his pruning shears through his eye socket.

Leroy Luetscher had been working in the garden of his Arizona home when he slipped and dropped then into the ground, luckily they landed blade side down.

However, less luckily he then lost his balance and fell face first onto the handle which penetrated his eye socket underneath the eye.

Doctors at Arizona University Medical Centre -- where the shears were removed and his eye was saved -- said the handle had penetrated down into his neck… but you can probably see that from the x-ray.

A pedestrian in Brazil had a rather lucky escape when a car swerved off the road and smashed into her -- only for her to get up seconds later uninjured.

As this CCTV footage shows, the woman had been walking in from of a supermarket in Nova Andradina when the near death incident happened.

The white VW Beetle can be seen swerving to miss a motorbike on a junction and then careering off the road and towards the unsuspecting woman who is knocked off her feet.

During the accident the driver of the car was also thrown from his vehicle and while the worst would have been expected, both he and the woman are seen standing seemingly unharmed in the video.

275x250.jpgA diving instructor was reportedly forced to swim 20 miles in shark-infested waters after being abandoned by a boatman off Borneo's Santubong peninsula.

Japanese diver Hishashi Koze had been had been exploring a shipwreckwith colleagues when the boatman they'd sailed out with, lost sight of them and their air bubbles underwater

Unable to locate them, it was assumed they were in trouble and he headed back to the shore, leaving the trio of divers at sea. Two were soon picked up by a passing fishing boat, but Koze was left behind.

The 39-year-old then spent the following 24 hours struggling in the water and swimming the 20 miles back to the shore. Which all sound bad enough… and that's before you consider the fact the waters were shark-infested.

Speaking after making to back to safety, an exhausted Koze said he swam backstroke against the waves throughout the evening and morning and kept telling himself "I must survive - I must survive."

A shocking crash which saw an SUV flip over twice and crash into a car on a gas station forecourt has been caught on CCTV.

The accident happened recently in Texas and as can be seen from this clip, two men who were walking across the garage forecourt are lucky to be alive.

That's because this SUV apparently clipped the sidewalk and was sent into the air rolling twice before crashing into another car and missing them by inches.

Amazingly neither of the men were injured in the accident, and even more amazingly the crash driver is also said to have escapes relatively unscathed… the same can't be said for his SUV.

275x250.jpgEveryone needs a hobby, but maybe not like this. A Swedish man has been arrested after he was caught trying to split atoms in his kitchen… as a hobby.

31-year-old Richard Handl is said to have spent several months trying to build his own nuclear reactor at his apartment and even kept a blog about his exploits.

Unfortunately for Handl, after acquiring the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium he accidentally created a "small meltdown" on his stove. As you do.

Realising it could have been a lot worse, this prompted him to write to Sweden's Radiation Authority and ask them about the legality of what he'd been doing.

Their reply pretty emphatic… they sent around the police who arrested the would-be nuclear boffin who could now face fines or up to two years in prison.

275x250.jpg Britain’s oldest stuntman, who has appeared in a host of Hollywood movies, has recreated a stunt which almost killed him 26 years years ago.

64-year-old Rocky Taylor suffered a fractured spine, pelvis and horrific burns when the 40ft plunge from a burning building went wrong as he filmed Death Wish 1985.

But this week he plucked up courage to recreate the stunt in a bid to raise awareness of charitable legacies by throwing himself off a building at Battersea Power Station in London.

And as you can tell by the fact the headline of this article isn't "Britain’s oldest stuntman kills himself in fire dive" it all went to plan and Rocky survived uninjured.
