Ceefax service to close after 38 years

275x250.jpg Ceefax, the BBC's teletext service, has closed after bringing news-fans pixelated headlines for 38 years.

The world's first teletext service, Ceefax was initially seen as a way of providing subtitles for the deaf, but was soon used to provide news, sport, weather and quizzes.

The demise has come about because of the digital switchover. Over the past couple of years Ceefax has disappeared from most UK homes and now viewers in Northern Ireland will lose their analogue signal, and Ceefax with it.

No amount of pushing the red button will be the same as dialing in the number for the page of news you wanted.
