A 33-inch cow and other animal record breakers

275x250.jpg The inescapable fact everyone loves odd animals has not been lost on Guinness World Records -- they've wheeled out a bevy of interesting animal-based records to promote the launch of their 2011 book.

Weird animal records include the dog with the longest tongue, the world's smallest cow and a Jack Russell which can burst 100 balloons in 44.49 seconds.

Swallow, a pint-(of milk)-sized cow from Yorkshire was the one named as the world's smallest bovine measuring just 33 inches from hind to foot despite being fully grown.

Owner Caroline Ryder says the micro cow has already become a star and her diva like demands could see The Wonder Stuff's 'The Size of a Cow' play every time she enters a field.
275x250.jpg Record – Longest Tongue (Dog), 4.5 in (11.43 cm)
Puggy, a 10-year-old Pekingese from Texas, USA, has been discovered to have the Longest Tongue on a Dog, which measures an astonishing 4.5in (11.43 cm), nearly the same length as his body! Puggy was adopted in 2002 after being abandoned because of his unusual appearance.

Owner Becky Stanford said “People who meet Puggy for the first time do a lot of double takes; they are in total disbelief and are amused by his unique appearance”.

Commenting on Puggy’s new world record Becky reflected, “It means a great deal to us that he has accomplished what he has. From being a stray dog, being dumped, to being a Guinness World Record Holder is just phenomenal. I just can’t believe it”.

275x250.jpg Record – Fastest Time to Pop 100 Balloons by a dog, 44.49 secs
Meet Anastasia, a feisty little Jack Russell Terrier who has a mad passion for balloons and holds the world record for Fastest time to pop 100 balloons by a dog in just 44.49 seconds, that’s more than two balloons a second! Anastasia’s talent for popping balloons was discovered at a friend’s New Years Eve party.

She entered the house and “just went crazy for all the balloons,” says her owner Doree Sitterly based in Westlake Village, California, USA. Anastasia, who is also a stunt dog, has broken her record several times bettering her time in every attempt.

Doree added “When Anastasia sees balloons in public, she starts with a small whine and builds to a squeal. She’ll then begin screaming like a Banshee and is difficult to control. She is focused on popping balloons only and nothing else”.

275x250.jpg Record – Longest Snake in Captivity, 24 feet (7.3 m)
A reticulated python called Fluffy from Columbus Zoo in Powell, Ohio, USA who measures over 24 feet (7.3 m) and weighs 220lb has been recognised as the Longest Snake in Captivity after a year of research from the global record keepers.

The length of the snake is the same as two cars, a caravan or a limousine, and it took a total of nine brave zoo members to lift the record-breaking snake for her picture in the new book. Fluffy arrived at the Zoo in 2007 and since then has been visited by between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors a week.

Carey Pratt, Assistant Curator at the Zoo says: “Fluffy is a fairly calm and laidback snake. She enjoys her life of solitude”. When asked about Fluffy’s diet, Pratt said “Let’s just say that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse wouldn’t make good friends for her”.

Other new records included in the 2011 book are:

Oldest gorilla in captivity
Colo (US), the first gorilla ever born in captivity, is now 53 years old.

Tallest horse
Big Jake (US) 20 hands 2.75 in (82.75 in, 210.19 cm).

Oldest sheep
Lucky (AUS) is 24 years old.

Tallest dog
Giant George (US) is 43 in (109 cm) tall.

Longest rabbit Darius (UK) is 51 in (129 cm) long.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday said: “Britain is a nation of animal lovers, and animal achievements are among the most popular records in our book, so for 2011, in addition the usual chapter on record-breaking creatures in the wild, we’ve added an entire new chapter focussing on our favourite pets, zoos and farm animals.
