Translations of celebrity children's odd names

275x250.jpgCelebrities are being warned to check for funny or odd translations of any unusual names they pick for their children.

The problem was highlighted after it was revealed that Kai Rooney - the name picked by  Wayne and Colleen Rooney for their new son - has different meanings around the world.

Kai means "pier" in Estonian, "probably" in Finnish and "stop it" in Yoruba -- making him Stop it Rooney.

Now a translation firm has launched a £1,000 service for other celebrities who worry they might make the same sort of mistake.

And they say stars including Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, David and Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale should have all used it, find out why after the link.
Suri, as in the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, means “pickpocket” in Japanese, “turned sour” (from the verb “surir”) in French, “red” or “fire” in Farsi (Persian) and “horse mackerels” in Italian.

Cruz, the name of David and Victoria Beckham’s youngest son, means “cross” in both Portuguese and Spanish. But it is also Spanish for “withers” (the ridge between the shoulder-bones of a horse).

Zuma, [Stefani Rossdale] means “running horse” in Japanese, “new day” in Mayan, “peace” in Arabic, and “Lord frowns in anger” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl.

Today Translations says their £1,000 name translation audit - which will check the meaning of a prospective baby name in 100 languages - is expected to be a hit with celebs

CEO Jurga Zilinskiene said: "Many celebrities now like to give their babies unusual names.

"A name today is no longer just a name but also now an online identity in a global village – something that parents have a responsibility to consider.

"When you consider that there are some 800 spoken languages in Papua New Guinea alone, it is not exhaustive but it’s a good start."
