Students set new 'most Smurfs' world record

275x250.jpgA group of over 2,500 students have set a new world record ... by dressing as Smurfs at a Swansea nightclub.

The revellers all painted their skin blue and slipped into white costumes in a bid to smash the previous record of 1,253 blue people set last year in Ireland.

A team of five adjudicators for the Guinness World Record organization counted 2,510 Smurfs at the Oceana nightclub, more than double the previous record.

Organizers say there should have been more Smurfs, but a number of people had an allergic reaction to the blue face paint ... luckily it wasn't enough to risk the record and leave them red-faced.
"It was the weirdest experience of my life, being in the middle of a crowd of what looked like cloned smurfs," said James Houston, president of the Swansea University Student Union.

The event was organized by costume shop Jokers' Masquerade who supplied 3500 costumes to any would-be Smurfs, a spokesperson for the company said: "Smurf Guinness World Record holder has become an illustrious title.

"There have been five attempts over the last eighteen months with Swansea trumping Castleblayney’s 1253 Smurfs recorded last year.

"We knew that if we were going to break the record, we had to do it in style and 2,510 Smurfs will be a tough act to follow for any budding record breakers."
