Smart CCTV to 'recognise' sights and sounds

Artificial Intelligence CCTV cameras are being developed which will 'hear' noises like someone screaming or glass being smashed.
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth say the technology will react to this and be able to capture more crimes on camera, leading to increased convictions.
The cameras can be taught to react to visual and audio prompts such as the sound of someone screaming, or the sight of someone running in a shopping centre.
They would then automatically start recording, focus on the action and alert an operator or even call the police.
Dr David Brown, director of the Institute, said: “The visual-recognition software will be able to identify visual patterns but for the next stage we want to get the camera to pivot if it hears a certain type of sound.
"If in a car park someone smashes a window, the camera would turn to look at them and the camera operator would be alerted."
The research team say the AI would react to the prompts by swinging the CCTV camera towards in them at the same speed a person would turn their head if they heard someone scream, which is about 300 milliseconds.
Their three-year surveillance study is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
