Artists get what they want, by painting it
When two artists decided they wanted an iPhone they came up with a novel way of getting one.Justin Gignac, 28, and Christine Santora, 24, painted a large picture of the phone on canvas and offered it for sale ... at the same price as the popular gadget.
It was snapped and they bought the real-life item. Now they have painted dozens of things they want. All have been sold for the price of the item, whether USD 3 for a slice of pizza or a cheque for USD 1000 to pay a months rent.
The couple from New York say they came up with the idea while discussing what they would buy with the cash if they sold any of their traditional painting.
"We talked about what we would do with the extra money if we sold paintings and then decided to just be honest and paint what we wanted," said Justin.
"The first painting we sold was 'Buffalo Wings' for $12.70."Once they receive the money they then buy the item and send the person who purchased the artwork a photograph of what they have bought.
The artists say they keep to painting things they want rather than things they need: “We like to keep the art to things we want, not things we need. We don't think people would be as interested in buying our groceries or our electricity bill, a Wii is much cooler,” said Justin.
The couple are also planning a holiday to Las Vegas after painting everything they would need on the trip such as flights each way, nights in hotels, money for slot machines a visit to see showgirls and gambling money.
The project has become such a hit that their website crashes every-time they announce new work for sale, but some of their biggest wants have not yet sold."Financial Security" is still on offer for for one million dollars, as is “Instant Street Cred” but priced at USD 1 it is only available to Charles Saatchi.
