Rise in golf cart injuries
The number of injuries caused by golf carts is on the rise, claim medial researchers. Many of those injured are left with concussion and victims were found to range in age from two months to 96-years old.
While in 1990 only 5772 people were injured by the battery powered vehicles, by 2006 the number was up to 13,411.
Lara McKenzie, of the Center for Injury Research and Policy believes the rise is due to the carts being used in more settings off the golf course such as airports, national parks and college campuses.
Falling or jumping from a golf cart was the most common cause of injury, though thousands have being struck by one of the 25mph devices, often resulting in hospitalization.
McKenzie said: "Given the large increase in golf cart–related injuries over the study period, greater efforts are needed to prevent these injuries.
"Private and public facilities that allow golf cart use can help prevent cart–related injuries by requiring driver's licenses and safety/operations training, establishing safety policies and considering golf cart safety in the design of pathways and landscapes."
