Bangers and cash - the 2p sausage

200x190.jpgA supermarket has started selling the cheapest sausages in the UK - just two pence each.

ASDA has also cut the price of potatoes and carrots claiming that strapped for cash families need only pay £1.57 to make bangers and mash for four.

Customers wanting an upmarket version of the meal at Gordon Ramsay’s gastro pub The Devonshire fork out £13 for sausages and gravy plus an extra £3.50 for mash.

The move comes at a time when many food prices are soaring and Britain is feeling the world credit crunch.

ASDA’s sausage buyer Jenny Liggat said: “Families are feeling the impact of the credit crunch in their pockets.
“We thought the idea of a 2p sausage would be welcome news in the aisles.

"Food prices have increased but ASDA is committed to continually offering customers great value products at an everyday low price."

'Bangers and mash’ are believed to have first appeared on pub menus after the First World War.
