NASA needs plumber on space station
Days after landing a probe on Mars NASA has been confronted with a more down to earth problem - their toilet is broken. But it is not as easy as calling the plumbers in when your loo is 217 miles above the earth on the space station, anyway can you imagine the call out charge.
The problem is that the toilet is not producing enough suction to transport human waste away from a crew member’s body in zero-G.
Now NASA must try to find critical spare parts so the long-term hygiene of the international space station is not threatened.
The crew have had issues with the loo for the past week and have tried fixing it by replacing parts on a number of occasions.
Cosmonauts Sergey Volkov and Oleg Kononenko, assisted by NASA astronaut Garrett Reismann hoped they had fixed the issues but have now told controllers the toilet still doesn't provide suction.
As a backup crew on the ISS have an emergency supply of plastic bag with sticky openings - the solution used on early space flights.
