Extinct gene brought back to life
Scientists have resurrected the DNA from the Tasmanian tiger and inserted it into a mouse embryo. This is the first time a gene from any extinct animal has been brought back to life inside another living creature.
The last remaining Tasmanian tiger died in captivity in 1936, but the boffins say it is unlikely the development will lead to the cloning of an entire Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine Jurassic Park-style.
They say that reactivating genes taken from many extinct creatures, including dinosaurs could help to provide new insights into their biology.
