Asimo robot conducts orchestra
Classical music went high-tech yesterday when a robot conducted a orchestra for the first time. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra was handed over to Asimo, a diminutive 4ft3in robot, who then proceeded to conduct a performance of Mitch Leigh’s “Impossible Dream” from the musical “Man of La Mancha.”
The Honda made bot gave what was described as a dramatic and impressive performance complete with hand gestures and nodding of his head.
It then welcomed applause from the audience at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall.
Critics have pointed out that while Asimo gave a solid performance it was not artistically interpreting the music and unable to respond to the orchestra.
ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, is designed to help people and Honda hope it will someday assist the elderly and disabled in their homes.
