Having a dog costs owners £31,000
Dogs cost their owners on average £31,000 over their lifetime, it has been claimed.A poll of dog owners found they spent on average £45 per week paying for food, vets bills, grooming and insurance.
But some dogs are more expensive than others. Chihuahuas favored by stars like Paris Hilton cost an average £88,691 during their 13-year life - though we are sure Tinkerbell can get through that in a couple of weeks.
The greyhound came second with a lifetime bill of £82,797, followed by the mastiff, at £81,619. The boxer in fourth place costs £49,896 while the English Setter came fifth at £49,548.
A spokesman for insurance company esure who commissioned the poll said: "Today’s pets are treated more like members of the family and this new attitude is reflected in the amount owners spend on their pet’s lifestyle."
